Proaspat intors de la Ibiza, unde mixase in renumitele cluburi Space si DC10, Carl Cox a avut amabilitatea de a acorda in exclusivitate pentru Nights.ro un interviu in care ofera detalii pe larg despre petrecerile de inceput de sezon in Ibiza, despre festivalul Sunwaves, noul sau album ce urmeaza a fi distribuit pe USB stick, dar si despre tineri producatori / DJ-i de la care sa ne asteptam sa se afirme.
How are you?
Yes very well thank you, I’m back in England now for been in Ibiza for the week-end at Space Opening Parties.
Great
It was really good!
First of all i want to wish you Happy Birthday for the 10th season with The Revolution at Space in Ibiza.
Thank you!
We heard amazing things about your 10 years of Revolution at Space in ibiza. What can you tell us more?
Well the thing about Space is that i have a long history of lead carried to the club for many years before we first started to then becoming a rezident dj there, to create a brand new Tuesday night session at Space. In the early days was known as an after-hours club, opening on a Sunday from 7 to 5 or 6 o’clock in the evening. So for us we created a whole new clubbing at Space of which is obviously becoming very popular for me and also the club itself taking up a new form of night club is all about now, and basically over the years Space is turned in to one of the amazing mega-club ever ever built.
For the opening party you also announced that you will play a 10 hours set. What are you preparing for the mix? Are you going to play the best hits from the last 10 years at Space?
Yeah, i mean the feeling for me...i have so much time to play so much amazing music of which basically helped me to put Space and myself on the map, so with very each year, in very each hour of the year of could be there as a resident DJ, i will be playing some of the records that made that night exist. From the first time that we've started right through until start of the 10 hours - where we are today. Being like a history of Carl Cox and the music that people will remember if they was there from the beginning, of what made that place in fact to erupt with the music, that was available to me at that time and untill we are today.
You played music during last week-end in Ibiza, Space Terrace and afterwards @ DC10.. How did you find Ibiza this year, what is the vibe on the island?
yeah, the vibe on the island was that there were not many hotel rooms available, the taxies wasn't enough, all the bars was very busy, everything on the island was going very, very well this year, everyone that was there was so positive and it was a very good feeling to see the people were very excited to be back in Ibiza again. So, this was really amazing to see places like Ushuaia, and its hotel just opened and also they have a venue on the beach which is absolutely stunning, i went to DC10 but I didn’t play there, but i went to DC10 and i had a veeeery good time. It’s amazing now that after all these years you still have people in the house, truly excited to be back in Ibiza again, even after over the last couple of years people weren’t sure about Ibiza, but i think that people are very sure about Ibiza now.
You played ‘till the sun was up at Sunwaves Festival in Romania last year. How did you feel there?
I really enjoy it, it’s something which always raises the level of what I can do as a DJ, as an artist and I’m always like testing new music, i always find the new ways of creating the sound of Carl Cox at any of these big festivals or parties and I always do the right to the occasions when it comes to something of which people are looking forward to and their expectations and I always arrived above that expectations.
Everybody is looking forward for your new projects and we heard that you will release the fourth artist album, what is going on with that?
I've been working on this album for like one and a half year, I’'ve also created the album so it could be performed live, so all musicians and the vocalists that we have on the album, and the songs that we have on the album, are already basically ready to go when it comes to making this LIVE, talking, basically titled to any club or to any festival event, but when do we are releasing this album, we-re not releasing it through internet like normal, we are going to release the album through a USB-stick, so you buy the USB stick and you have a micro-site you go to and it will be decoded to the person who used it, through a number, and then basically you buy the album with updates of music, videos, behind the scene’s, everything is on your USB stick because i believe that people should have something which is tangible, something in the hand - you put the album on the internet, you just download it, most people don’t care, is like "yeah i have the album, it’s ok bla bla bla"....but if they have to physically own something of which they can feel a part of – in the sense of history - a perfect way to have something which has some meaning and some substance.
This album is now on promotional stage on USB stick where eventually you get to know more and more about the reason why is coming in this way and also people will also be able to download it for one price and then they will be allowed to keep downloading this album and keep downloading the mixes and many, many things that has to do with what i’m doing and therefore you have something which is in some purpose of what i’m about and i believe that is the only way that i want to continue to release music. If people are truly fans or people who want to know more about me and my music and the way that i feel about that. So the album is called “All Roads Lead To The Dancefloor” (pre-orders will be available online via www.intecdigital.com) and for me the reason why I decided to call it with this title was because i wanted to make every record on the album something that you dance to, so i have made drum & bass for the album, I’ve made dubstep on the album, I’ve made latin house, I’ve made techno on the album, it’s really a journey from my mind, of music of which i believe to be something that represents who i am and with that I’m really happy and proud to release the album at the end of this year.
How did it all started ?
My Carrer started many years before, on where i was eight years old as a child and my father use to buy records and bring them to the house and make parties at home, so i was exposed to people dancing to music. My father was bringing home the music from the record store, when he was buying James Brown at that time, Phil Brian, Elvis Presley, some black music and some rock’n’roll. Literally i was inspired by this, because my dad had ear to music and one day he ask me to sit in the front of the record player and play his records, and then i was playing music and then people will dancing to the music, so for me even i was eight years old i was already DJ-ing.
Our website - Nights(dot)ro strongly supports romanian talents in electronic music. Are there any romanian talents do you know of ?
No, at this time no, i haven't actually been exposed to some of the DJs from Romania at this time. For me, there's always interesting to see Romanian DJs and Romanian products (electronic music produced by Romanian Artists) sent to me directly or to my record label, and then i can tell you more about what i have experienced. Right now, every time i go to Romania, i get in contact with the warm-up DJs, i play my music and then i leave. So, i didn't have the chance to read tracks, to see who's rocking it, i am pretty sure that you know more on this matter than i do.
From who should we expect walking on your footsteps?
Yes, it is very difficult, because i have very big footsteps :), so it's difficult to follow me on this way, but there's a few DJs that i think people should know about, one of them called Nicole Moudaber, she basically is someone who is making some amazing music right now, she lives in Ibiza and London, but she comes from Beirut , she actually is an amazing DJ, ik think it is time to see more of her. Another one to mention, comes from England, Tim Green, he is really making a very good impression on the dance scene right now, also Jon Rundell, from my record label, he is making some amazing tracks right now, very good music. At this moment, these 3 people are amazing, in my opinion, and you'll start to see more music from these guys .
How do you spend your leisure?
I actually ride motorcycles, i have many at home in England, but also in Australia, i have over 43 motorcycles in collection, Ducati, Suzuki among them, you must know i am a big fan of Ducati, i always ride them when i have time, not only in UK, but also in New Zealand and Australia. You have to know this, i am going to Ibiza on a motorcycle, passing through France and Spain on the way, it takes one week to do that, i have the chance to visit new places and also the chance to ride some of the best motorcycles ever built, so you probably figure out that for me, it's not about music, it's about riding.
